MC5′s Kramer plays Wisconsin protest

by Susan Whitall

Detroit music legend Wayne Kramer of the MC5 joined Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine Monday at a protest rally on the steps of the Wisconsin Capitol in Madison.

The musicians performed the Woody Guthrie song “This Land Is Your Land” for assembled teachers and other union members protesting Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s budget that would slash the collective bargaining rights of state workers.

Bundled up against the cold, Morello and Kramer gamely chopped away at their guitars (Kramer wearing gloves) and sang the Guthrie anthem with the long-”censored” last verse restored.

Calling Wisconsin’s governor the “Mubarak of the Midwest,” Morello told the crowd to sing “so that they can hear you in Cairo.”
