Jindal: Government Lackadaisical on Oil Spill

By Althea Fung

As the long-term environmental effects of the BP oil spill continue to surface, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is out with a new book slamming the federal government’s response.

In Leadership and Crisis, which was released today, the Republican said the government was lackadaisical. “They believed that the elite could fix everything,” he writes. “It struck me during our conversations how often the president mentioned that his Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, won the Nobel Prize. Good for him. But just how exactly was this medal going to fix the problem, cap the well, and keep the oil off our coastline?”

Appearing on NBC’s Today show this morning, Jindal told host Matt Lauer, “It wasn’t just the immediate response it’s the fact the structures were so bureaucratic, they didn’t cut through the red tape. There seemed to be a lack of urgency.”

Jindal said the federal government was short on ideas on how to contain the spill and stop it from reaching the wetlands.

It took months to stop the damaged well from leaking into the Gulf of Mexico. Scientists are concerned about the long-term effects of the spill on fish and wildlife in the area. According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, scientists said some endangered wildlife face extinction.
